People Rachel Standring
After working in Auckland for 3 years, I moved to New Plymouth to join the successful Family Law Team at RMY Legal. I love being back by the mountains and the ocean. The tramping and beaches around New Plymouth are stunning.
I specialise in immigration and family law but also assist clients with property and other commercial transactions.
I did a degree in music as well as law and some certificates in Chinese. My law and Chinese qualifications come together well in the areas of immigration and family law. This was a key driver for me developing expertise in these specialist areas of the law.
Immigration and family law are both areas of law that never fit in a box as no case is ever really the same as the next. These areas of law can be emotionally driven but I find achieving success for my clients is very rewarding.
In family law we often try to find a compromise that works for everyone, a middle ground, which can be pretty challenging. A compromise that works for everyone often provides the most practical and stable outcome for the people we love. Doing the long, hard yards and helping my clients get the best result at the end is a really great feeling.
One of the most important things to me is being clear with my clients, so everyone understands exactly what’s going on with the case. The other thing is to really listen.
People are important to me, as is customer care. It may be a cliché, but my reward and motivation always comes from helping other people find the best legal solutions to often very challenging problems.
I enjoy a variety of sports including social netball, swimming and dance. I love sharing my interest in music and previously played cello with the Wairua Sinfonietta a charity orchestra for young professionals in Auckland.
